New competition 4" catless downpipe for BMW 228i ix, 328 i ix, 428i models 2012-16 with special SULEV motor. The original BMW 3 series F30 chassis was released in early 2012. All of 328i models came with the 4 cylinder N20 engine. The N26 engine is rated as a Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV). However, starting around March 2012 build date, BMW started replacing the N20 engines with the N26 engine. The N26 engine is rated as a Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV).
These engines are very similar to the N20 models except minor changes: metal fuel lines instead of rubber, a valve in the fuel tank venting system to test the fuel system for leaks, an electronic wastegate and larger catalytic converters. These models were only made for the USA.
There are 13 states that will have SULEV cars. They are California, Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia. Most of the cars built after March 2012 in these states have N26 motors. While, the remaining states should have N20 motors, there is still is a chance you may get the N26 motor. The same applies for the states that have the SULEV cars.
To tell if you have an N26 motor check the engine compartment and look for the VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL name tag - If your nametag says ULEV you have a N20 motor; if it says SULEV you have an N26 motor.
